About the Apprenticeship

Overview

Directing Apprentices will observe some of the finest directors in the country while assisting on mainstage shows, including for the Humana Festival of New American Plays. Apprentices are also guaranteed several directing opportunities within the Professional Training Company season. Note that this apprenticeship is equal parts observation and directing.

Learning Goals

Be able to articulate the processes of a variety of directors and styles through observing and assisting some of the finest directors in the country while developing a unique directorial voice directing in the PTC season and working on independent projects 

Be able to collaborate with dramaturgs, playwrights and designers 

Learning Strategies

Serve as a directing assistant for three or more mainstage productions 

Serve as a directing assistant for at least one Humana Festival production 

Serve as a resident director for the Professional training Company season  

Opportunities to direct independent projects 

Assist in the script selection process for the PTC Tens and New Voices 

Ideal Candidate Possesses

A four-year degree or equal working experience 

At least one year of experience beyond an undergraduate degree or equivalent training is strongly preferred 

An interest in new play development

Ability to lead groups of artists in collaboration 

Previous directing and assistant directing experience

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Alumni Include

Freelance SDC directors, artistic and associate artistic directors for regional theatres, MFA directing candidates 

Schedule

This is a full-time apprenticeship. Directing are expected to assist in mainstage rehearsals in conjunction with PTC productions. Candidates should be aware that the apprentice schedule can be rigorous and irregular.
