About the Apprenticeship


The Production Management Apprentice works closely with the Production Manager and the Associate Production Manager on all of the season’s shows and helps support seven technical departments with approximately 50 staff members. This position will assist with crafting show schedules, collecting information about upcoming productions, and take the lead in production managing the shows in the Professional Training Company season.

Learning Goals

How to function as a production manager in a major regional theatre, including:

Helping to bring ambitious and complex designs to fruition

Navigating the relationships of a project’s creative team and the theatre’s production staff

Calling, organizing and leading production and design meetings

Create and monitor production budgets and schedules

How to determine and manage safety concerns for the theatre, including: 

Leading a Topic Talk 

Becoming familiar with the Actors Theatre Safety Manual

Participating in Safety Committee meetings

Managing an Accident Investigation

How to communicate with and contract union designers according to the LORT/USA agreement, and be conscious and aware of the LORT/AEA agreement and its impact on production schedules, staffing and budgets

Learning Strategies 

Serve as the production manager for all Professional Training Company productions

Help plan and coordinate travel for designer visits for design meetings, rehearsals, and technical rehearsals 

Process work orders, budget documents, event forms, and other in-house documents to generally assure expedient and reliable organization of day-to-day production office activities 

Attend weekly departmental meetings, design and production meetings and record and distribute notes from these meetings

Other duties as assigned

Ideal Candidate Possesses 

Experience in various technical theatre departments 

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Excellent professional ethics with an emphasis on discretion

The ability to work in a fast-paced environment

A high skill level in Microsoft Office programs

Alumni Include
