Actors Theatre of Louisville is saddened to share the passing of Louisville philanthropist and Actors Theatre former board member and supporter, Rev. Alfred Shands III.

A tireless advocate for the arts, Al Shands was known to many as an avid art collector, and to Actors Theatre of Louisville, he was an advocate of theatre arts and was committed to supporting the development of talented playwrights. Al Shands also had a career as a filmmaker, producing over 35 documentaries that explore aspects of Kentucky life.

In 1978, he received a Peabody Award for the film “Who’s Child Is This”. Actors Theatre of Louisville will forever be grateful for his friendship, guidance, and visionary legacy.

Executive Artistic Director Robert Barry Fleming shares, “Reverend Al was a consistent and loyal friend to the Louisville arts scene including serving on Actors Theatre of Louisville’s board. His legacy of philanthropy and arts advocacy was as noteworthy as was his kindness to our organization, but what I’ll miss the most was his thoughtful, steady presence and generous spirit.”

His presence will be sorely missed by all in the local and national arts community.
