FROM BACKSTAGE AT ACTORS THEATRE OF LOUISVILLE

This fall, I had the joy of traveling to NYC to see an early workshop of The Comedy of Errors—and I’m still smiling about it. After so many months of planning over Zoom, it was wonderful to finally meet our collaborators from Fiasco Theater and The Saunders Collective in person.

The workshop performances offered an exciting peek behind the scenes: this creative team has such a skillful grasp of Shakespearean storytelling. Their cut of the script highlights the funniest moments while bringing real clarity to the plot, and the music is absolutely delightful. I found myself laughing out loud right along with everyone else in a packed room.

I’ve produced Comedy of Errors before at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival—but experiencing it with real siblings and twins (the Saunders!) playing the twins was a total revelation. It adds a layer of magic you truly have to see to believe.

I can’t wait to share this joyful production with our Actors Theatre of Louisville community.

Another layer to the magic of this show is in the set design. In our and Fiasco Theater's efforts to transform the Bingham Theatre into the ancient Greek city of Epesus, the designers of this production endeavored to create a space that evokes the alley marketplaces of the time and setting.

You'll find zany patterns stitched together and draped over portions of the seating as well as saffron and robin-egg blue lampshades that will assist Shakespeare's words and the original music by Heath Saunders in transporting you as well.

We hope you enjoy this preview of what's in store. Join us, get cozy, and get ready to be swept away in a true Comedy of Errors!

And one more update to share is that we're working to replace the emergency sprinkler system in our parking garage to ensure that our parkers are safe. That's just one part of what managing a facility aimed at delivering unforgettable experience requires!

See you at the theatre!
