Remembering Sallie Bingham

The Actors Theatre of Louisville team extends our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Sallie Bingham, who recently passed away and whose legacy as a multifaceted writer, feminist activist, and philanthropist has uplifted artistic communities both here in Kentucky and nationally.

Three of Ms. Bingham’s works as a playwright have been produced at Actors Theatre: both The Act and In the Yurt were performed on our stages in 1979, followed by her play Couvade in 1983, which was also part of Actors Theatre’s international tour to Romania for the USIA American Theatre Today Exhibition several years later. We honor her literary accomplishments as a prolific author whose imagination spanned multiple genres, her vision for a more inclusive ecosystem for artists, and her dedicated advocacy for women’s voices, which included founding The Kentucky Foundation for Women and the Sallie Bingham Center for Women’s History and Culture at Duke University.

Actors Theatre of Louisville joins our community in celebrating Sallie Bingham’s life, and we are forever grateful for her impactful work in support of the arts and social change.
